exercise–just doing it! - June 12th, 2009

The alarm rings and a choice confronts me; Do I get up and lug my bones to the gym, or do I catch another hour of precious rest?  Sleep is great and all, but I know that what my body really wants is the exercise, despite what it is telling me at 5:30 in the morning when my rational self isn’t quite clear through the semi conscious sluggishness.  That rational self knows that the day will go better, that I will be more clear minded, more energetic, and less likely to crash in the afternoon if I can just clear this first of the days hurdles.  The body works on inertia, however, and every cell seems to be screaming, “SLEEP!”

This is where self discipline, if I really had any, or at any rate habit, would come in.  I, however, have not been a reliable companion of these two stalwarts, so for me I have to make the choice every darn morning.  This is why I need something fun (I have a highly developed sense of fun) like raquetball or basketball to lure my out of bed and into the workout clothes.  That is not always an option however, so it is always back to THE CHOICE.

Fortunately, this morning, I keep my body at bay long eneough and the rational part of me catches up.  I take a deep breath, gather my self, and get moving.
